Freebie Wednesday!
For the first Freebie Wednesday, I wanted to share with you, one of the most impactful books in my life.
This book may not sound like much, at first. The premise may sound simple: a book that combines all four Gospels into one narrative.
Yet its simplicity is part of its brilliance.
People often accuse the Gospels of contradiction. They claim that the Gospels record different versions of events, or different events entirely, making it impossible to know what really happened.
And that seems persuasive — until you combine the accounts.
Johnston Cheney combined all four Gospels into one narrative, working from the Greek. He added no words, and left none out.
Do you know what he found?
The four Gospels combine perfectly.
All these charges of apparent contradiction simply fade away when you combine all the words and details and put them in chronological order.
Yet the most profound impact of this book on my life has been this: it helps me understand Jesus’ life as a whole.
Each Gospel author wrote with a particular focus. It makes their respective Gospels fascinating to read, as they highlight different aspects of Jesus’ life.
But when you put them all together, you get such a full, rich, comprehensive picture of Jesus life! You can understand for the first time why Jesus made certain decisions, why He reacted in certain ways, why His enemies tried certain tactics. When the story is fully laid bare, all the details feed into each other and help you see the life of Jesus as never before.
I’d been reading the Bible my whole life. But when I first read this book, it felt like seeing the life of Jesus for the very first time.
